For a lightweight, high-performance board consider using Paulownia lumber. Paulownia is about 2/3 the weight of the lightest commerical wood grown in the US. It weighs an average of 14 to 19 pounds per cubic foot (versus 44 lb. for oak and 30 lb. for pine.) Yet Paulownia has great strength, holds nails and screws well, and is nearly knot-free. It is light-blond in appearance and will take stain well, allowing you to create a custom look for your board.
We suggest that you consider our Cedar and Specialty Woods for species with which to complete your board. If weight is not important, you can make your board as decorative as you wish using any of our lumber -- the glassing process will seal and protect the wood.
NOTE: If you intend to use your board as an art object, you may use any wood and you need not glass your project.
