Cypress, Southern

Southern Cypress (Taxodium distichum), also called Bald cypress, swamp cypress, sinker cypress, pecky cypress, and tidewater red cypress, comes from the Southeastern United States. It is a light, yellowish brown wood with an almost white sapwood. Old growth cypress  salvaged from riverbeds is called sinker cypress. Sinker Cypress generally has a warmer tone.

The grain is generally straight and has a medium/coarse texture. Old-growth Southern Cypress is a durable wood that is resistant to decay and insects.

Southern Cypress has good gluing, nailing, finishing, and paint-holding properties, and tends to machine well.
