Tamarind, Spalted

Spalted Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) is a truly unique wood that hails from the tropical regions of Africa, though it is now planted in tropical areas around the world.

The heartwood of the Tamarind is a deep red-brown and fairly narrow. It is the lighter yellowish sapwood that carries the spalted characteristic that gives this wood its unique figuring. However, the sapwood is not considered very durable and is susceptible to rot and insect damage.

Spalted Tamarind is moderate to difficult to work due to its interlocked grain, but turns, glues, and finishes well.
