Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event Feb. 27-28

We are exciting to announce that Lie-Neilsen will be here at Goosebay Sawmill and Lumber on Feb.27-28th. They will be demonstrating all of their hand tools for any one who wants to attend. There is no charge for admission.

Lie-Neilsen’s traveling events give you the chance to try their full line of tools and learn techniques directly from their staff. These events are unique in the philosophy behind them and the experiences at each one. Their focus is to promote woodworking education, hands-on skill building, and a spirit of collaboration.

Lie-Neilsen makes over 100 types of planes, saws, spokeshaves, chisels, floats and more. They have improved and refined designs, and use better materials like Ductile Iron and Manganese Bronze for castings and cryogenically treated A-2 Tool Steel for the blades. Their plane blades are much thicker than those of any other production planes.

Please join us in February to see what makes these tools so great.lie-nielsen

New! Paulownia Marine Plywood

8-7-14

We are now an east coast dealer of 2.7mm Paulownia Marine plywood. Paulownia is an extremely light weight wood, but it is also very strong. That is why it is very popular for building surfboards. Before now, you could only buy Paulownia as lumber or veneer. We are excited to now have the plywood as well. It is not only great for surfboards, but it can be used for any marine or outdoor uses. If you want to build a boat and keep the weight down, then this is the plywood to use. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Craig Altobello – Marquetry Exhibit

4/14/14#1 (dragonfly) for web
Craig Altobello has been coming into our shop for some time now. I’ve been lucky enough to have seen some of his work. It isn’t often that you see someone do what he does. His work is being shown in an exhibit at the Conservation Center in Concord, NH. Here is a write up that they did on Craig.

“Even the floorboards aren’t safe from wood artist Craig Altobello’s appraising eye. When he needed to tear up a few white oak boards during a home improvement project, he didn’t see scraps, he saw the right color and grain for creating a leafy branch in one of his works of art using the ancient but little-known craft of marquetry.

The result can be seen in the image of a woodcock that is part of Altobello’s exhibit hanging at the Conservation Center headquarters of the Society for the Protection of N.H. Forests until the end of April. The exhibit features nature-inspired works made mostly from native New Hampshire hardwoods like hickory, apple, aspen, maple and black locust.

Altobello, of Peterborough, was a hobby woodworker for decades before getting inspired by marquetry, a wood inlay technique of piecing together thin wood cutouts — only one-sixteenth of an inch thick – into beautiful, multi-shaded images. Each piece of wood’s patterning and color inspires what it might become once a thin slice of it is fitted into a scene, Altobello said.

“A two-by-four is more than a stud – it’s a sky,” he said about one of his creations.

A former science teacher, Altobello said he uses close observations of the natural world, especially the birds, plants, trees and landscapes of New Hampshire, to provide the subject matter of his works. His teaching background also comes through in his enthusiasm for sharing marquetry with others, and his exhibit includes panels explaining the technique step-by-step.

Altobello’s exhibit is open for viewing Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Conservation Center Conference Room, located at 54 Portsmouth St. in Concord. The Conference Room is used for meetings, so please call (603) 224-9945 before visiting to make sure it’s open.”

Girouard Mandolins Contoocook NH

7/8/13

If you want to see some stunning birdseye and curly maple then you must click on the links below. They are custom mandolins made by some people that I’ve had the pleasure to do business with. Max and Lauri Girouard are mandolin builders and have their own shop in Contoocook, NH. They not only know how to make the best sounding mandolins but the best looking as well. Look at what they have been able with some of our maple. Also, read about how they are making quite the name for themselves.

Ted West Woodworking

Ted West runs a woodworking shop out of Canterbury NH. We use Ted for some of our millwork because we never doubt the quality of his craftsmanship. One look at his work and you’ll know why he is highly regarded as one of the top woodworkers in the area. His knowledge and passion for woodworking make him very easy to work with. We are very fortunate to have him as one of our contacts. If you are looking for a master craftsman then check out his website twestwoodworking.com and see for yourself.  There will also be contact info if you are interested in talking to him about a project that you have in mind. If you are interested in picking out your own lumber for a project, you are more than welcome to come into Goosebay and do so. Sometimes we are able to come across some rare finds. In the picture to left, you’ll see some Russian Black Oak that was found in a Russian peet bog after sitting more than 1500 years.
