Maple, Spalted

Spalted Maple is a work of nature’s art that happens when fungus invades a Maple tree creating a unique, one-of-a-kind vein pattern. Spalted Maple can be found in either hard maple or soft maple. While Spalted Maple occurs naturally in the woods from airborne fungus, it can also be manufactured by introducing the fungus into the wood.

Because the wood contains the fungus, it becomes much softer and must be handled delicately when worked. Care must be taken when sanding or grinding Spalted Maple lumber as you can easily take away too much very quickly. Tools should be very sharp in order to avoid tear-out of the softer fibers.
